HD Hyundai Heavy Industries achieved a
cumulative production of 15,000 units of the 'HiMSEN', the first domestically
developed, independently-developed technology.
On the 29th, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries held
a 'HiMSEN Production Cumulative 15,000 Units Commemorative Event' with the
participation of Han Joo-seok, Head of Engine and Machinery Business, HD
Hyundai Marine Solutions President Lee Ki-dong, ship owner supervisors,
overseas shipyards, and classification society officials.
At the event, Han Joo-seok, Head of Engine and
Machinery Business at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, said, "The 'HiMSEN', a
technological innovation achievement, is highly regarded not only in Korea but
also around the world," and added, "We will continue to do our best
to develop eco-friendly engines and improve product quality." The 4,320㎾-class HiMSEN engine
(model name: 9H35DF), which was produced for the 15,000th time on this day,
will be installed on a 16,000 TEU (1 TEU is one 20-foot container) container
ship of Swiss company MSC, which is under construction at Yangtze River
Shipbuilding in Jiangsu Province, China. The HiMSEN engine is a 4-stroke medium-sized
engine that HD Hyundai Heavy Industries developed with its own technology in
August 2000 after more than 10 years of research. Starting with the first 4 units produced in
2001, production has increased significantly every year, reaching 5,000 units
in February 2011, 10 years after production began, and reaching 10,000 units in
March 2016. It is planned to produce 1,000 units this year, and the backlog of
orders is approximately 2,700 units. Before the development of the HiMSEN engine,
all domestic engine companies had been manufacturing products under license
from overseas companies, but HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has been producing and
applying its own engines 100% in the medium-sized engine sector since 2011. It
currently exports to about 60 countries around the world, and has a 35% share
of the market for medium-speed marine engines, ranking first in the world. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is strengthening
its technological prowess by commercializing the 'HiMSEN Engine Status Remote
Monitoring System' in 2015 and developing a 36,000 horsepower (26.4 MW)
dual-fuel (DF) engine, which boasts the world's largest output among
medium-sized engines, in 2019. Recently, in response to strengthening
environmental regulations, it is also focusing on developing eco-friendly fuel
engines such as methanol and ammonia. Last year, in the second quarter, the
development of the new high-performance HiMSEN engine, the H32 model (3~4.5 MW
class) methanol engine, was completed, and this year, the H22 model (1.4~2.2 MW
class) ammonia engine is also under development. As a holding company, HD
Hyundai is taking the lead in the engine aftermarket (maintenance market)
business by establishing a cooperative system between group companies. Through HD Hyundai Marine Solutions, it
provides a one-stop aftermarket solution for all ships equipped with engines
produced by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, not just HiMSEN engines. Based on the technology of HiMSEN engines, it
is promoting the 'licensing (patent use contract) business' and is also
securing overseas bases in the marine engine market. HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore
Engineering started construction of the MAKEEN engine plant (150,000㎡), a joint venture
established through joint investment with Saudi Aramco Development Company
(SADCO) and Saudi Industrial Investment Corporation Dussur, in June of last
year.
It is scheduled to begin full-scale engine
production in the fourth quarter of 2025, and its maximum annual production
capacity is 30 large marine engines, 235 medium-sized engines, and 160 marine
